I am an Associate Professor of English at Washington State University, where I also teach in the Digital Technology and Culture program. I work in the fields of digital humanities, nineteenth-century media archaeology, and British Romantic and Victorian literary studies.
I believe that stories can help us imagine a better world, dwell with our uncertainties, and challenge the assumptions and privileges that have accompanied us into history. I read most evenings, and encourage my students to do the same.
On the other hand, the technologies making up our world are strange non-human entities whose processes exceed our understanding of them, and yet they are an intimate part of our lives and our bodies. I’ve spent a lifetime investigating how technology works, and I find computers and other media hilarious, horrifying, and endlessly fascinating.
I received my M.A. from Saint Louis University and my Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
I share my life with two kitties named Buddha and Nemo.
