Project 2: Social Media and Memes

The social issue the memes I picked represent the attitudes on Immigration, not just from the 2016 national debate but as an overarching issue that’s repeatedly brought up. The issues widely differ from not letting anyone in, to letting in a few and making it hard for them, to allowing everyone in.

political humor

the purpose of this meme is to humor by humiliation towards those that call against immigration even though that’s what this country is made on. using logos, pathos, and ethos the picture is a native American, the only citizen that didn’t immigrate. the audience is those that don’t see the ignorance in their ideas.

political humor

The purpose of this meme is to use humor through Logos and Pathos in two parts to reveal first of all that immigrants are mostly only taking jobs others don’t want to do such as working in the fields (or marrying a misogynistic sociopath). The other part is directed at Trump who is against immigration indirectly calling him a hypocrite for contradicting his stance. the audience is those old enough to be able to vote. especially those for trump and anti-immigration.

pinterest- Kris DuCharme

The purpose of this meme is to use fear and humor by way of logos and pathos to compare what the conservatives want America to become and how North Korea is. Focusing on No illegal immigration. N. Korea as completely closed off borders both in and out with trespassers and escapees getting shot. Using this extreme mocks the Republican ethics. the audience is the Far right side Conservative/tea party republicans that believe in each of these points. using this meme brings the point of immigration as a whole with the rest of the platform.

sizzle

The purpose of this meme is to use humor to contradict the pro-immigration idea that all anti-illegal immigrationists fully don’t want immigration at all but just want working, strict due process. the meme uses logos and pathos to persuade the argument in a question, popular with the older meme of choice. the audience is those that think Anti-illegals are anti-immigrationists.

politically incorrect cartoons- Ron Russell

The purpose of this meme is to make a similarity from calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant is to call a meth dealer an undocumented pharmacist. the comparison brings up the point that an undocumented immigrant isn’t an immigrant at all. Like the matrix meme, the point is to tell people that immigration isn’t the problem but the lack of process. The audience is those that believe the right want to completely take away all immigration.

Pinterest

The purpose of this meme is to add humor through logos and pathos to clear hypocrisy. they’re trying to destroy something that allowed their family to come over. The meme is supposed to discredit the early candidates. the audience is anyone eligible to vote to vote for a platform that runs with this kind of irony.

Pinterest

the purpose of this meme is to compare what America is now compared to when it was established with principles to help the needy. the original poem the new colossus has been changed to represent what trump wants to be done. the audience is those that have lost the true idea of America and the principles that it was originally based upon.

conservativenuke’s weblog

The purpose of this meme is to use pathos to slam the failed system blaming the democratic party for Elian Gonzales situation. Elian Gonzales is a Cuban teen that was forced to stay in America with maternal relatives instead of going back to Cuba with his father. unlike most anti-immigration memes, this one shows how it has failed by doing what its supposed to do, keep people here. the audience is those that believe the system in place works perfectly already.

the purpose of this meme is a less humorous and more as a blunt statement while using “thug” looking men. the piece mocks the idea that having illegal immigrants will better our economy but if they can’t even help their own then how does that even make sense. the intended audience is those that don’t look at the full picture or see how if it doesn’t work one time how will it ever work another time.

snopes

The purpose of this meme is to represent the side of immigrants that gave advancements to our society. using Ethos by giving a well know illegal immigrant as the figurehead, strengthens the argument. The intended audience is those that think all illegal immigrants do nothing but help themselves and destroy the economy.

Immigration has been an issue brought up during every presidency expressing that illegals are taking our job and to some going as far as to say “stealing our children and raping our wives”, a little more extreme then what most think but people are gullible enough to believe anything without reading up on facts. another point is of our economy and the immigrants home economy. To use Mexico as an example, their economy has been on a rise for a decade now but that seems to always seem to be forgotten. these memes represent both sides but don’t clue into all the facts. they’re funny to be funny and to make people think further. Most memes use a side of logic to juxtapose the funny side and simple enough for anyone to understand the problem there.

black lives matter- TreAndrea Russworm

TreAndrea Russworm’s speech on race, technology and the problem of recognition for black lives matter was split up into 4 points starting with what she called recognition and representation talking about black people and specifically black women in films. she bases her points off of Hegelian recognition pointing out that recognizing specific points of that person means there going to base judgment solely for that reason. Black women in films are often stereotyped as evil and even not recognizing their own offspring and other rituals that are represented through films. Out of this people will either always feel empathy for the person or and understanding (spectating or relating)

she then goes on to hashtags, data sets, and black subjectivity which focuses on actions making them noticeable. The idea “I don’t want to be a hashtag” was brought up to represent that black people don’t want to be failed recognition, to only to be represented as another number on the death count.

Her third point is on black death as viral. Only the most potent videos are the ones that go viral that are picked by the media. From this what Russworm calls a new “online Jim Crowe” was introduced with lawers distorting the information that was taken from the video to place blame back on the black life.

Her last point was on gaming representation. she introduced biometric blackness and used the new NBA2k17 as an example of black people giving out their facial feature to whoever collects that data.

These are some of the points taken from her lecture about race, technology and the problem of recognition.

Lets Play Video

The game we chose was Undertale, which none of us have played, before so we really didn’t know what to expect. The game started off with the player character falling into a hole and travelling deep underground. The player then encounters a deceivingly friendly flower named Flowey, who teaches the character about combat and then quickly turns on them. After taking a hit, a goat have person monster named Toriel attacks Flowey and saves you. She takes you further underground towards her home and you learn that the underground is solely occupied by monsters. We played off of each other’s progress, and deaths making progress withing the missions. None of us really understood what was going on or what was the end game for the game. The game was slow and repetitive with gameplay similar to Pokemon with monsters getting harder as you progress. The puzzles within the game did make it a little exciting, but it did just become repetitive because all the puzzles that we encountered were very similar the same. The character Just fell through all times when you failed a puzzle and didn’t really explain why we did.

We played off of each other’s progress and deaths, getting as far as we could. None of us really understood what was going on or what was the end goal for the game. The game was slow and repetitive with gameplay similar to Pokemon with monsters getting harder as you progress. The puzzles within the game did make it a little exciting, but it did just become repetitive because all the puzzles that we encountered were very similar. The positives about the game seemed to be its sense of humor and twist on turn-based gameplay, since you could spare your enemies and had dialogue options in battle like giving compliments and flirting.
