Think, Pair, Share (40 Minutes)
Consider this quote from the end of Douglas Rushkoff’s Program or Be Programmed:
We do not teach programming in most public schools. Instead of teaching programming, most schools with computer literacy curriculums teach programs. Kids learn how to use popular spreadsheet, word processing, and browsing software so that they can operate effectively in the high-tech workplace. These basic skills may make them more employable for the entry-level cubicle jobs of today, but they will not help them adapt to the technologies of tomorrow. […]
The bigger problem is that their entire orientation to computing will be from the perspective of users. When a kid is taught a piece of software as a subject, she’ll tend to think of it like any other thing she has to learn. Success means learning how to behave the way the program needs her to. Digital technology becomes an immutable thing, while the student is the movable part, conforming to the needs of the program in order to get a good grade on the test.
- What are your experiences from high school with regards to computer literacy classes? Do you feel that they primarily made you a user and not a programmer?
- Is there a broader sense of programming that Rushkoff might be pointing to here? I.e. what in addition to computer programming might a program like DTC want to teach?

Complexity of a Moment
When choosing a data tracking app that would be beneficial I had to think about the activities that I do daily. Out of all the activities that I do I figured choosing a sleep tracking app would be the best option because that’s one activity that no matter the circumstance I do every day. The app I decided to pick is the alarm clock app that comes with every IPhone. But instead of using the whole app I will only be using a portion of the app that happens to be a new add on feature when you update the IPhone software to IOS 10. The add on I am using within the app is called Bedtime which analyses your sleep patterns throughout the night. The bedtime feature allows you to set the time you want to wake up while showing you what should be your bedtime depending on how many hours of sleep you wish to get. It also allows you to select which days you would like to be woken up at this time while reminding you when your bedtime is. The way the feature works is by recording each movement you make throughout the night and from there analyzing your sleep behavior. It also recommends when is the best time to wake up/fall asleep to make sure you are able to function at your full potential. The great thing about this sleep tracker is unlike other ones I looked at, you don’t have to pay for anything. So you are able to gain full access to what bedtime has to offer you.
The purpose of the bedtime feature is to track your sleep patterns throughout the night each day of the week. Not only are you able to track your sleep pattern each night but it allows you to see your sleep pattern over the course of a week, a month as well as the whole year. It also provides a little presentation on why sleep is so important in case you were curious. But let’s say you aren’t pleased with the bedtime feature in the clock app, your IPhone automatically recommends other apps for sleep if you want to compare and contrast to find which one is beneficial for you. Although I do have many speculations of the features effectiveness. One reason being is I am a person who sleeps with a fan and I don’t know if that background noise will play into effect with the outcome of my sleep analysis. While another being how the app will detect my movement since I do sleep on a memory foam mattress, which are known for limiting the vibration of movement so if you are sharing the bed with someone else they don’t wake up to any of your movements throughout the night. So I almost wonder if the bedtime feature is the most beneficial when the user has an apple watch and wears it on his or her wrist throughout the night, since the apple watch syncs to your phone and all the data on each application. I feel like that may be the best route to optimize your sleep analysis results. Although I have used the app a couple of times I did notice that the nights I got less sleep I seemed to have the most stressful days verses the days I had more hours of sleep. The main point for the bedtime feature is to help regulate your sleep patterns which many individuals, especially college students tend to lack. The importance of doing so actually has many benefits to the human body such as regulating body weight as well as keeping the body’s immune system strong. My goal with using this app is to regulate my sleep cycle and training my body to get 8-9 hours of sleep a night. The only downfall to that is I struggle with insomnia and I love to take naps. So it may be a struggle at first.
Project 2: Social media and Meme’s
The Social issue I decided to focus on was Immigration. Although my opinion on this issue is neutral, others seem to either be totally anti-immigration or pro-immigration. Due to the 2016 Presidential election there has been a lot of controversy around Americas immigration laws. Especially with one of our candidates persuading Americans with his famous slogan “Make America Great Again”. Another reason for my decision to pick immigration as my social issue was despite all seriousness the meme’s I found surrounding my topic made each argument about immigration humorous.
Via google
- The purpose of this meme is to highlight an issue that Americans see as a downfall to illegal immigrants in America. While logos are symbolizing the irony in the argument considering the fact that many years ago the white man did the same thing to the Native Americans. This Meme contributes to mainly pathos, by trigging an emotional response surrounding the job crisis individuals may feel here in America.
Via google
- I found that this Meme correlates with the meme prior in its ironic humor discussing one of the many reasons people are anti-immigration. While acknowledging that majority of people just like to complain when they don’t get their way. For instance, when analyzing this meme, I felt that those who like to complain are the ones who are jealous of those immigrates who are able to hold a job while they can’t. The main point is people of ignorance will always bash on someone’s success.
Via google
- The purpose of this meme is pathos in a political humor jab at presidential nominee Donald trump who likes to create allegations/ stereotypes of deviant acts immigrates allegedly do. The real humor behind this meme is that fact that Michelle Obama is finding truth in trumps allegations by saying this, since Donald Trump’s wife stole Michelle’s speech from 2008.
Via google
- The purpose of this meme is to express pathos and logos to humiliate trump in efforts to highlight the fact he is so unpleasant that only woman immigrates are able to tolerate him. The logos in this meme is the billboard expressing its position through words. While the pathos is contributing to the humiliating humor the visual provides.
Via google
- The purpose of this meme is to appeal to pathos and ethos by placing the words of American history on a picture of a Native American. The Ethos is found by the decision to place a Native American who had their land stolen by white explores. Although the Pathos of this meme many only be relevant to the culture of Native Americans. Some may also not understand the truth behind this meme if they are uneducated of American history.
Via google
- This humorous meme is an excellent presentation pathos and logos of the ignorance some individuals withhold. While majority of the Immigration discussions tend to speculate around our neighboring country Mexico, people lose sight on the fact that America is built on the bones and hard work of the Native Americans and the immigrates who traveled by sea/ land in hopes of a better life in America.
Via Memegen
- The purpose of this meme is logos to humor the audience while highlighting a serious matter that presidential nominee Donald Trump is trying to inforce. North Korea is a communist and dictatorship country in East Asia that has closed its borders to prevent occupants within the country from leaving and occupants outside the country from entering. Where in the contrast America is country of values instilled by the people.
Via Memegen
- The purpose of this meme is to contradict those who are voting for trump because they believe he will stop the invading of immigrates into the United States. While those same American voters are failing to realize that the nominee promising these actions has a wife is an immigrate and electing him contradict his actions of getting rid of all the immigrates by making her, an immigrate, the first lady of our nation.
Via Memegen
- This meme appeals to pathos, ethos and logos by having a symbolic and serious meaning with the placement of the American flag, consider the flag of freedom, behind a bald eagle which is the national bird of the United States of America. The seriousness is seen in pathos by deliberately saying that immigration is the least of Americas problems and especially not the only problem America has.
Via Memegen
- The purpose of this meme is to highlight pathos and ethos in a humorous way by stating the facts of Donald Trump’s family origin’s. By stating Trumps family came to America from Germany making them foreigners to American soil. Which I feel many Americans are to ignorant to look at the facts of Trump’s past because they only want to believe what they see and that would be an American businessman. But If you look in depth at the logistics that Trump’s ancestors would then technically fall under the issue many Americans blame on immigrates and that’s stealing American
