My first day moving into college was a very interesting experience. First off I come from an island in Washington. I’m used to being surrounded by water. When I first laid my eyes on Pullman I realized that I was on a different sort of island. Instead of being surrounded by water I was now surrounded by wheat fields. It was also hot. Super duper hot to the point where I was regretting coming all the way out here to go to school. My parents said their goodbyes and I watched as they drove off. My roommate wouldn’t be here for a couple of days so I decided that I was going to be alone for awhile. I had my room closed and decided to play some video games on my laptop. Not soon after I hear a group of voices outside. I decided to peek my head out and I see a group of people at one end of the hallway. “Hey look an Asian!” is what I was greeted with. I walked down the hall and introduced myself to everyone. They wanted to see if there was anyone else in the rooms so we went down to each door and knocked. No one else came out so we assumed that they weren’t here yet. And this is how I met my hallmates that would be a huge part of my freshman year. Also a lot of these people that I met that day ended up being my friends to this day. It’s funny how simple it is to make new friends even when you come to a completely new place that is out of your comfort zone.
Comparing the Past to the Present
In this assignment, I was asked to find a picture of one of my parents when he or she was around the same age as me and compare it to a recent photo of myself. I chose to do a picture of my mom that I found when she lived in Spokane when she was about 19 years old.
I’m not sure not what she was doing in this picture, but I found it off of her tagged photos on Facebook. I read the comments under the photo and even her friends that were there when the photo was taken, didn’t remember why she was making that pose. What’s funny, though, in that same album, her friends are seen making that same pose.
I decided to recreate this pose because it was the only picture I could find that I could recreate pretty easily and one that was taken around the same age as me, which is 20. Surprisingly, it took me a few tries to get this pose down, but even then, the arm position is still a little off after reviewing it. What gets me is the decision to include the two fingers like that. Since it’s my party-crazy mom, I’d say it’s best not to ask questions.
Our physical similarities, at least to me, don’t seem that apparent, but when I ask my friends, they say they can see the resemblance between my mom and me. However, I think we are most alike when you get us to laugh at the same time. I think we sound pretty similar, but that’s not always something I like to admit
Illustrating Odd Auto-Completes
For this assignment, I was asked to search for an odd or strange autocomplete for a Google search. At first I was having trouble finding an odd autocomplete and typed phrases such as “i hate when” or “i have” but came up pretty empty handed. I kept typing in phrases such as these until I finally entered “i dropped.” The immediate result was the phrase “i dropped the screw in the tuna.”
I decided to pick this phrase because, as a frequent web browser and meme fanatic, I have never come across this saying before. It struck me as odd and I felt it would be easy enough to illustrate. I found the images of the screw and tuna off of Google and put them together in a photo editing program.
After I completed the image, I wondered where the phrase came from so I searched for it and came across a video. The video is a sketch from a show called Kenan and Kel about a situation in a court room, where the suspect dramatically admits to “dropping the screw in the tuna” many times. I thought the video was pretty funny and the only thing that bugs me is that, even though I found out where this phrase is from, I’m still not sure how it came into existence. Comedy writers, right?
What’s in a name?
My first name is Douglas which stands for “mysterious dark river” in Gaelic, which is the native language of Scotland. So you may be wondering how a Korean got probably one of the whitest names on the planet. Well it has a lot to do with history as a matter of fact. Back during WWII there was a five star general named Douglas MacArthur. He would later also serve in the Korean War and was one of the main reasons why South Korean didn’t completely fall to the North Koreans. Douglas MacArthur is seen as a hero to this day to the South Koreans and my parents wanted me to be named after someone who had a major impact in the world. General MacArthur was also the last five star general to serve in the United States Army. So all in all my name is a pretty unique aspect of me. On a side note my brother is name Lewis after Meriwether Lewis. So my family decided to name us after an explorer and a general. Kind of interesting when it comes to telling the history behind our names at parties.

Love At First Shot
The assignment was to find a picture of a couple who are in love and to tell a story about them. This is a photo of my puppy Walter and his girlfriend Hattie. They actually are so in love which is why I find this funny. We had met Hattie on a walk and they instantly clicked, and Walter and hattie are also neighbors so they play together almost everyday. They are the cutest couple on the block!
My Favorite Vacation
The assignment was to make a collage of my favorite vacation. I am lucky enough to have been on a lot of vacations but this one was definitely my favorite. My sister and I were living in Utah for a year last year. When it was time to go home we packed up our car and took a road trip through Utah, Nevada and California and back to Washington. We camped for about 20 days in different places everyday. One photo is from Lake Tahoe, the other is from Dead Horse Point and the last photo is of my sister and puppy in Goblin Valley. It was a beautiful trip, one I will never forget!

What’s In A Name? - Brian Martinez
I guess I can talk about the name I use on my other blog, Doctor Zombie. Where did the name come from? I am not really sure, I think I was just trying to think of something that wouldn’t sound lame like Yellow Zombie or Scary Zombie. But now I use that name pretty much everywhere, DocZomb for short. I even have tried to create a character around it and have made a logo for the name. At one point I had written a character in a screen play based off the name. I found some irony about a doctor trying to find the cure for the zombie apocalypse and then ends up undead himself. I lost the script in a hard drive crash. Hopefully I have time to rewrite it. Anyways, that is my dumb story behind the name. I think that makes a blog post, right?
