Movie Review - Brian Martinez

I chose to write a Movie Review for the film In Bruges.

In Bruges is hard to describe. The fastest way would be to call it a Black Comedy/Crime film but that would not do this outstanding film justice. In fact, it seems the movie is marketed as comedy/action through the trailer and yet the action in this film is very limited to a few scenes. What is quickly apparent about this film is how strong of a screenplay the film has and how the plot is tightly written together. This is character driven story with fantastic writing, themes, actors, and scenery. The characters feel real, multidimensional and each with there own story arc within the plot. They range from the very child like and immature Ray, who is breaking down over a job gone wrong or Ken who is much more empathetic, patient, and overall good natured man who happens to kill people for a living. Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson all give outstanding and memorable performances. There is also fantastic use of foreshadowing throughout the film with the ending being the culmination of every event in the film. If you are not okay with lots of explicit language, then this film may not be for you. Fans of quick, smart, and funny dialogue and memorable moments should not miss this film.

Here is a clip below which displays some interesting moments (mostly of Colin Farrell’s character) from the film without spoiling the plot.

Again…explicit language…

What’s in my bag? -Patrick Ota

I usually like to be a light packer, and that’s why my back pack has so few items in it. It’s not even just school either, I tend to pack light on vacations as well. With that being said, they are all essential.
So for a school bag I have the classic spiral bound notebook (gotta be 5 star) accompanied by paper’s right hand man: the pencil. When given the option, I like to have a pen, the fluent writing combined with structural integrity creates the better writing utensil. I seem to have misplaced all of my pens though. Not a problem, the number two pencil can do the job. Theses are simple items but they have a large degree of versatility: taking lecture notes, jotting down important information that I hear or see, a space for written expression with expert expertise, and creating any number of important reminders.
The other item in my bag is currently the iPad 3, this is temporarily coming off the bench for my injured starting MacBook pro. The use of this item ranges from note taking, to beat making, to web surfing, to friend hurding (the act of getting ones friends to converge at a certain area at a certain time).
The contents of my back pack may be light, but it’s bite far outweighs its bark.

Movie Review DS106

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/write-a-movie-review/

For this DS106 assignment, I chose to write a movie review on American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle the U.S. Navy Seal Sniper. Since this movie has been pretty new and has been the latest talk, I decided to see it myself. I had no idea what the film was going to be about because living in Pullman with no cable, I never saw trailers on TV nor did I do a little bit of research before watching the movie.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 star because the movie showed how Chris Kyle the main character was a dedicated man to the service. This movie really portrayed how Chris Kyle had excellent skill in using a riffle to save many lives out on the battlefield. He was nicknamed “Legend” because of his courage acts and great skill to aim for the enemy; it has also made him a target because of the reputation he is starting to build. Leaving a wife and child at home to serve his country also made it hard for him to live two lives meaning trying to live a normal life at home but also remembering his family when out on the battle field.

The reason I gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars is because it is all based on his skill, which is what the movie was about but not much detail on his missions. There were only small scenes of his life at home, and not much detail about his life after. I overall recommend everyone to watch it because it was a great movie.

Quote Me On That

I decided to do Quote Me On That (http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/quote-me-on-that/). For this particular assignment you are supposed to choose a quote from a reading an explain why it interests you. I picked a quote from To Kill A Mockingbird, “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This quote is quite popular, and I remember it the most out of all the books I’ve read. This is because I like how it is a metaphor to explain something.

The quote is referring to not kill a mockingbird because it symbolizes innocence. In the book the kids are told not to kill mockingbirds because they don’t do anything to bother anyone. It is used to show the loss of innocence and I think it is pretty interesting on how it correlates together. There were a lot of incidents where the mockingbird symbol would pop up. I just think the meaning is different and true. That is why this quote interests me, it makes you think and it explains the meaning of being good in a different way.

Shaina Bengston Blog#1 Honest Game Cover

http://assignments.ds106.us/types/visualassignments/page/2/

First you take a video game cover. Then you make an honest titile meaning what the game really is. Then you blot out the old title and put in your new title.

I took the game Baroque shown here:
And having played the game- literally you need to die sometimes in it to progress in the game. Each time you die your sent back to the beginning ‘city’ area and have to return to the tower. You get different cutscenes and unravel more of the story after each time you die- Sometimes you have to die on certain levels.

Warning Poster- Ashley

I thought the warning poster was pretty funny and flexible so I decided to create my own poster. This is super random and I couldn’t think of an idea until I saw my boyfriend drinking green tea. Although it may appear to be funny I believe warning posters are very important to our society nowadays. There are many stories regarding how people have sued companies, businesses or people due to the lack of warning posters. A very popular example is the Mcdonald’s hot coffee case which occurred in 1992. The lady spilt her coffee on her lap and had severe burns. As a result, she sued Mcdonalds and after losing tons of money, they heavily rely on worded warnings on cups to avoid future liability. For those of you who haven’t noticed, Mcdonald’s has the caution label on the coffee cups.

Some people may assume incidents like these are just excuses or ignorant people trying to make money, but either way companies will be responsible for any damage done to their customers. At least if one of your customers tries to accuse you of something, having a warning sign will save you against many lawsuits and losing money. Our society is all about having good communication, without communication we are lost, angry and confused. This is also an example of how poor communication can hurt all of us.

Oh the Places I’ll Go

The blog post I decided to do was a Digital Storytelling Assignment about my Dream Vacation. The main part is to create a Pinterest Board and to describe your dream vacation. My board can be found here at https://www.pinterest.com/paisley_p/oh-the-places-ill-go/

Between Greece, Italy, Scotland, Canada, and even somewhere simple as Palm Springs, these are all places I would love to spend my vacation time in. Whether exploring, relaxing, shopping, or just taking pictures, I believe all of these places have beautiful beaches, architecture, and weather. My dream vacation would to be to be gone for an entire month or two and just travel all over the world.

I have been to Italy before and absolutely loved it. I was only 8 so I feel as though I took advantage of my trip there by not appreciating all the historic places I went and experienced. The Amalfi Coast was probably the most beautiful place in all of Italy, even though it was the scariest drive.

In order for my dream vacation to come true I would need a lot of money and a lot of time off. I think I would also need research on language, places to stay, places to eat, and the culture as well. I should research places to go and places not to go too. Since I did see the main places in Italy I think I would more so want to focus on just exploring freely with no plan. I am all about food, and I do remember Italy and Rome especially having some of the best food! I think that would be a big part of my trip too. I would research some of the best restaurants and wineries to go explore and check out to see if it lives up to its expectations I would have for it.

Garno - Blog 1

So for this hybrid Friday I decided to pick the Short Story with Random words and animal(s) assignment. (http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/short-story-with-random-words-and-animals/)

I decided on this written assignment because I felt it would be a great way to test on the spot creativity. Expecting a decent story on the spot based on a select set of words can be a challenge and I wanted to see if I was capable of coming up with something that made some sense from ten random words.

So the ten random words I was graced with were: dizzy, cherry, strange, blackness, sprite, racket, blinding, sauce, bland, and branch. In general, not too bad a selection to work with, so I ended up writing this.

“Once upon a time, there was a blue fox. One day this fox was sleeping quite comfortably on a branch, unaware of a blackness encroaching upon the forest. This blackness was very jealous of the blue fox, sleeping so carefree. So the blackness crafted a strange poison, leaving it next to the sleeping fox for when it woke up.

When the fox woke, she stretched before noticing a strange bowl of sauce sitting beside her. She sniffed it, taking note that it smelled very much like a cherry. The fox loved cherries, so she lapped it up without a second thought. The sauce, however, did not taste like a cherry, instead it was rather bland. Suddenly, the fox became incredibly dizzy and fell from the branch.

The blackness reveled in it’s success of poisoning the fox. It was so excited, it did not realize that it was making quite a racket, alerting other creatures in the forest of it’s misdeeds. One such creature that the blackness awoke was a small sprite. This sprite, Holly, flew to where she heard the racket coming from, finding the blue fox unconscious in the grass. Holly used her forest magic to revive the fox, and with a blinding light banished the blackness to the depths from whence it came.

The end.”

So, overall, incredibly fun to write. Trying to incorporate random words into something cohesive can be challenging, but the random words can make for very funny (if not totally odd) stories.

My Favorite Lyric

For this assignment, My Favorite Lyric. It is a visual assignment that was to create a picture of favorite lyric with a matching background picture. I chose the lyric from Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocketful of Sunshine song and matched it with a photograph that I found. While working on the assignment, I wanted to text to look more like a handwritten style rather than basic formal style.
